Mapping Tartary

European maps of Tartary, from the TARTARY Project collection, in a deep-zoom viewer. The reading editions, Ortelius's map of 1570 in Latin, Speed's of 1626 in English and a French copy of a lost Russian map of Siberia, show where this is going: every text on the map and on the back of the sheet, as engraved and in today's English, opened from a numbered pin.

About this site

The collection's catalogue and images come from the TARTARY Project's first site, tartary.vercel.app, built by Alexia Tsang. This page reads a copy of that catalogue taken on 29 Oct 2026 and opens the same deep-zoom images.

The Ortelius texts were transcribed and translated by an AI model, Claude Opus 5.5, reading Internet Archive's scan of the Boston Public Library copy, then scored against Marcel van den Broecke's edition at orteliusmaps.com. The Speed texts, from the Bibliothèque nationale de France copy on Wikimedia Commons, were read the same way and checked against the scan in samples, since no published transcription exists. The French-Russian map, from the Newberry Library, has no published transcription at all: its readings are the model's, with a second reading where two parts of the work overlapped. All three are a test of the method and have not yet been reviewed by a specialist. Specialists can check and correct them, label by label, in review mode (password for the project's reviewers). The Ricci and Miller maps are feature demonstrations from September 2026, with illustrative texts.
